ABOUT OUR GALLERY
Upstream Gallery was founded in 1991 by artists who came of age in New York during the 50’s and 60’s. The gallery continues a long tradition of artists presenting their own work, from the independent Impressionist salons and exhibitions of 19th century France to the artist-run galleries of mid-century Manhattan. Our founding artists created a vibrant gathering place where community comes together, celebrating art in many forms.
Today Upstream remains artist-owned and operated, with particular emphasis on quality, community, and providing a venue for other art forms. Our artists encourage each other in experimentation and development of technique, fostering mutual artistic growth. We embrace all fine arts media and styles – from realism to abstraction. As a result, Upstream has evolved as an established resource, not just for curators, designers, and art consultants, but most importantly, for established and novice collectors alike.
Current artist members work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, collage/assemblage, print-making and photography. Styles range from the representational to the abstract. Members have shown in a wide variety of venues throughout the United States and Europe.
Upstream encourages artists to submit their work for review to be considered for membership. Submissions are reviewed on a monthly basis, except during July and August. New members are voted into the gallery by a majority vote of the existing artist membership after an evaluation of work examined via the applicant’s website and actual examples of art submitted for review to the gallery membership. Our membership in recent years has been about two dozen artists.
