Dissolving Boundaries

In this work, the snow and ice are more than materials—they’re part of an ongoing conversation. A conversation about loss, about transformation, and about the fragile state of things. As they melt, they leave behind delicate imprints, echoing the environmental shifts unfolding around us.

A Sense of Place

“My new exhibition, “A Sense of Place,” represents a deep exploration of the seasonal shifts in light and weather across the landscapes of Iona Island and Snake Hole Creek in Rockland County.  This body of work emerges from my profound commitment to environmental causes and a desire to evoke a visceral reaction from viewers in an intimate exchange that transcends mere observation.  By exploring the intangible emotions and environmental memories associated with these landscapes, I aim to cultivate a sense of belonging that invites reflection and connection.”

"My hope is that the viewer might stop and think, perhaps ask what’s happening here? They will know it’s environmental, a work from nature and yet it’s not quite right… perhaps this forces a second or even a third look, and each time a new layer of meaning may surface." ~ Rachel Whitlow

Artist Conversation: Intricate Fabric of Life

Susan Richman and Rachel Whitlow

Moderated by Marie Louise Miller of RiverArts

Upstream Gallery, June 5th, 2025 7- 8:30 pm

How does anyone cope with constant flux, with a steady stream of near emergency, with the knowledge that what once was, is gone? Illness, death, upheaval of most kinds necessitates an anchor. When we feel this way, some of us look to nature.

In this conversation we will explore the liminal space of change and connection as we dive into the works of artists Richman and Whitlow. Each artist has a unique relationship with nature both as a source of inspiration and a medium from which to create, seeking her anchor in the uncertainty of nature and creating images in which that “intricate fabric of life “is revealed.
