Susan MacMurdy

In the city or beyond, Nature is my starting place. My mixed media collages reflect my contemplative deep-looking at the natural world. My current work explores the unexpected beauty of “urban nature” in the public parks, urban woodlands, and community gardens of upper Manhattan and the Bronx . A makeshift garden tucked away on a traffic island. Schools of fish darting upriver from the Geoerge Washington Bridge. Shadows of turtles and frogs moving through hidden ponds in a Bronx park. My work surprises by highlighting instances of natural beauty amid urban life that run counter to preconceptions that limit our sense of place, possibility, and responsibility —to the earth, to our cities, and to one another.
