Israel Acosta: Between Darkness & Light
April 9 to May 3
Artists Reception Sunday April 12 2-5 pm
Acosta’s work layers pop culture, religious symbolism and references to the American dream that provide stimulus to the complex, often contradictory visual influences surrounding working class immigrant families. Born in Puerto Rico to Dominican parents and raised in New York City, Acosta is himself a many layered soul, an observer of struggles between tradition and contemporary cultures. His inherent exuberance shows in his color, a reflection of a high-keyed Caribbean palette tempered by the spontaneity of contemporary painting.
