Reality & Perception:
Photography at a Crossroad,
Jan 31 - Feb 24, 2019
Sunday, Feb 3rd 2-5 pm
In the early 50’s Berenice Abbott wrote an impassioned essay: "Photography at the Crossroads." In it she argued strongly for the beauty of photography as a realistic medium, in contrast to the Pictorialism of the early part of the century, or the Surrealism of Man Ray. This year we asked photographers to submit work from their own practice that demonstrates their perspectives on these issues. We think you will find the results intriguing.
We were pleased to have the assistance of two wonderful outside jurors this year: Craig J. Barber and Alexandra Grant. Barber has been photographing for over 40 years. He is a master printer, teacher and specialist in antique photo processes. His work explores our ever-changing cultural landscape and he hangs in many major museums in the US and Europe. Alexandra Grant is Director of Chase Contemporary Gallery in Chelsea. which shows both emerging and established artists in many media. She holds a certificate from Sotheby's Institute in Art Business and a law degree with a specialty in intellectual property.
