Rachel Weatherford Whitlow

Seeing Silence

At the end of the fable which opened Rachel Carson's Silent Spring she wrote: "No witchcraft, no enemy action had silenced the rebirth of new life in this stricken world. The people had done it themselves." When Carson published this groundbreaking book 57 years ago, she launched the environmental movement of the 20th century. She could hardly have anticipated the cacophony of anti-environmental forces now forcing us, as global citizens, to re-assess our own role in the imminent destruction of our world.

Whitlow's work grows out of her deep involvement with environmental causes as well as the work of the Luminists, the Hudson River Valley painters and the Impressionists. Each of those schools was a reflection on the value of the natural world, as well as an early recognition that the human hand was already implicated in damaging that world.

Looking Both Ways

"Years ago, when I first got lost in the woods of coastal Maine, there was another body of work being done in parrallel that remained unshown. Over the past year I began to review a portion of that work. Looking back at those images and evaluating their relationship to the coastal landscapes turned out to be energizing in ways I didn't foresee. More importantly, it has helped point the way forward for me, and it's exciting to finally be able to share it along with some more recent landscapes." Jo Meer

UPCOMING SHOWS

2018 Calendar

Most solo shows are self-contained within either the Main Gallery or the Second (West) Gallery. Occasionally the Gallery will host a single group or solo show that uses both galleries. These include most of our juried shows and retrospectives.

This calendar will be updated as appropriate. Meanwhile Gallery patrons and visitors are also encouraged to fill out the email form on this page to receive our monthly email  newsletter which provides more timely specifics as each show approaches.
